Incidence of Disabilities

Document Actions

The most recent Statistics Canada survey (2002) found that approximately 3.6 million adult Canadians identified themselves as disabled. Approximately 12.5% of Albertans reported living with a disability. Generally speaking, more women than men have a disability. Older people tend to have more disabilities.

What does this mean for your community?

Using a conservative estimate, suppose that 10% of the population has a disability. Approximately how many people does that translate to in your area?

Fill in the blank in the following statement:

There are approximately ______ people with disabilities in my community.

Were you surprised by this number? Is it more than you imagined?

What types of disabilities are represented in your community? Approximately how many people does this reflect?
