Inclusive Libraries

What It Is

Document Actions
Introduction

An inclusive library is as diverse as its patrons and its community. Every library has its own unique needs and challenges. In this section, you will explore how your library may fulfill all of the elements that are important in becoming a welcoming and diverse Inclusive Community Information Centre.

Inclusiveness is an element or consideration for the library’s Plan of Service – a requirement of the Alberta Libraries Act.

To increase library accessibility for the whole community, you need to start with a common understanding of the elements of an inclusive library. With this information, you can review your library’s major goals and essential elements to determine the extent to which it is an inclusive library.

Another part of becoming an inclusive library involves getting to know your community in a detailed way. Consider the following questions: What are the demographic characteristics of your community? Who currently uses the library? Who does not currently use the library? In this section you will examine these questions and others as you explore the key elements of an inclusive library.

Envisioning Your Inclusive Library

An inclusive library is a place that welcomes everyone to participate in its programs and services. It strives to remove physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent patrons with disabilities from using the library and promotes their full participation in their communities.

An inclusive library:

  • respects the dignity and privacy of all users and encourages their independence
  • recognizes the rights of all people to be able to access the information required to build personal knowledge

What other factors would describe your vision of an inclusive library in your community? What does your library do now to act as an inclusive library? Take a moment to note your thoughts.
